Eating disorders are highly heritable and affected by environmental factors. An effective treatment in eating disorders requires a change in family members’ roles, rules, and responsibilities. This workshop will focus on family-based, empirically-supported interventions for individuals with eating disorders, that incorporate the active involvement of the patient’s family. The workshop will offer important information, strategies, and skills for professionals working with families in which one member has disordered body image or eating habits. The complexities and best practices of working with parents interested in engineering a healthy lifestyle in their families will be presented as well. The first part of this interactive workshop will focus on family-based treatment (FBT) for eating disorders in children and adolescents. FBT has proven effective for restrictive eating disorders (i.e., anorexia nervosa and avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder). The kay principles of FBT include involving all family members in the intervention, concentrating on parental coaching and empowerment, externalizing the eating disorder, and facilitating a gradual change in the family interactions around eating and food. The second part of the workshop will present a focused parenting program for parents with eating disorder histories. This intervention, Parent-Based Prevention (PBP), is designed for parents who have significant eating, shape, and weight concerns that stem from their own histories, but are now directed at their children. These parental concerns often manifest in monitoring and restriction of the child’s intake, children’s eating problems, and increased stress in the family system. PBP incorporates reevaluating parental concerns, and utilizing both parents’ involvement in trying out new feeding practices. Both parts of this workshop will provide clinical illustrations with case studies, and apply active-learner techniques (e.g., role plays) to guide interactive dialogues with the audience. Workshop participants will also have the opportunity to present cases for consultation.
